How to add them on X
- 1On X, open Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety.
- 2Go to Mute and block → Muted words, then tap Add (+).
- 3Paste a word from your list into the field.
- 4Under "Mute from," check Home timeline and Notifications.
- 5Set the duration to Forever (or pick a shorter window) and hit Save.
- 6Repeat for each word. X only accepts one muted word at a time.

Why mute words beat doomscrolling willpower
The For You feed is not a neutral list of posts: it's a ranking system tuned to maximize the time you spend scrolling, and nothing holds attention like outrage, controversy, and cliffhangers. Telling yourself you'll "just check X for a minute" pits your willpower against a system engineered by teams whose job is to keep you there. That's not a fair fight, and losing it isn't a character flaw.
Muted words flip the problem from willpower to infrastructure. Instead of resisting the bait every time it appears, you decide once (mute the topic) and the feed simply stops serving it. The decision is made on a calm afternoon, not in the moment the algorithm dangles something inflammatory.

Everything X's muted words can (and can't) do
X's muted words feature is genuinely powerful, but it has specific boundaries worth knowing before you build your list. When you add a word, you choose where it applies and for how long. For a real timeline cleanup, apply each word to both Home timeline and Notifications with the duration set to Forever.
Muting is also completely private. The accounts whose posts get filtered are never notified, and nothing on your profile reveals what you've muted.
- Works on your Home timeline and Notifications when you select both: posts containing the word, its hashtag form, or the phrase simply don't appear.
- Muting a word also mutes its hashtag: muting "election" hides #election too.
- Muted words don't apply to DMs, and posts can still surface in search results: mute filters your feed, it doesn't erase content from X.
- You can set durations per word: 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or Forever, handy for muting a sports final just until you've watched it.
- Nobody can see your muted words list, and muting never notifies anyone.
Using X intentionally as a creator
There's a version of X where you show up, post, reply to the people who matter, and leave. No 40-minute detour through the discourse. Mute words plus the focus bookmarklet get you most of the way there: your feed stops feeding you bait, and when you need zero temptation, one click removes the timeline entirely while posting and notifications keep working.

Eventually, probably. The bookmarklet targets X's current page markup, and X changes its front-end code regularly. It can't harm anything when it breaks; it just stops hiding the feed. We keep the version on this page updated, so if it stops working, come back and grab the current one.
Yes, that's the whole point. The bookmarklet only hides the feed and the trending sidebar. The compose box, your notifications, DMs, and profile all keep working normally, so you can publish and reply without the algorithmic feed pulling you into a scroll session.
Unfollowing removes someone's posts from your feed, but they can still interact with you and may notice you unfollowed. Muting hides their posts (or posts with certain words) invisibly. They can still follow and message you, and they're never told. Blocking is the hard cutoff: they can't view your profile, follow you, or interact with you, and they can usually tell they've been blocked.
Same path in reverse: Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Mute and block → Muted words. Tap any word in the list to remove it or edit its duration. Words you muted with a time limit (like 7 days) expire and unmute themselves automatically.
