Handle ideas

Type a handle and we’ll spin up rule-safe variations you can copy or check in one click.

How it works

1

Type a handle

Enter the name you want after the @. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

2

See it validated live

Every keystroke is checked against Instagram's real username rules: length, allowed characters, and period placement. Red marks show exactly what to fix.

3

Check availability and grab ideas

Open the profile URL on Instagram to see if the handle is taken, and copy rule-safe variations if your first pick is gone.

Instagram username rules

Instagram enforces a short but strict set of rules for usernames, and the signup form rejects anything that breaks them without always explaining why. Knowing the rules up front saves you the trial-and-error.

This checker applies every rule live as you type, so by the time a handle shows all green marks, the only remaining question is whether someone else already owns it.

  • Maximum 30 characters. Shorter is better for mentions and word of mouth.
  • Only letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. No spaces, hyphens, emoji, or other symbols.
  • No consecutive periods, and a handle can't start or end with a period.
  • Handles must be unique across all of Instagram: there's exactly one @yourname.
  • Trademarked names and handles that impersonate people or brands can be reclaimed or removed even after you register them.

How to actually check if a handle is available

Here's the honest part: Instagram has no public API for username availability, so no third-party tool, this one included, can query it in real time. Tools that claim live availability are guessing or scraping, and both are unreliable. What actually works is the profile-URL method: visit instagram.com/yourhandle and see what loads. If a profile appears, the name is taken. If Instagram says the page isn't available, the handle is usually free to register.

"Usually" carries some weight. A not-found page can also mean the handle belongs to a banned or deactivated account, sits on Instagram's reserved list, or was recently released and is still in a holding period. The only definitive test is trying to register it in Instagram's signup or username-change screen. And don't count on inactive accounts freeing up your dream name: Instagram doesn't release inactive usernames on request, no matter how dormant the account looks.

Picking a handle that grows with you

The best handles are short, easy to say out loud, and hard to mistype. Someone who hears your name in a video should be able to find you on the first try. Avoid stacking periods and underscores just to squeeze into a taken name; every extra symbol is a chance to lose a visitor to a typo.

Think beyond Instagram, too. Locking the same handle on TikTok, YouTube, and X keeps your brand searchable everywhere and stops squatters from camping on your name. Our free TikTok Username Checker runs the same kind of validation for TikTok, so you can confirm both platforms before committing.

Instagram Handle Checker, answered

Still stuck? Ask us anything.

Yes: completely free, no sign-up, and no limits on how many handles you check. It's a free tool from PostVona, the social media scheduler for creators and agencies.

No, and neither can any other third-party tool: Instagram doesn't offer a public availability API. What this checker does is validate your handle against Instagram's format rules instantly, then give you a one-click link to the profile URL so you can confirm availability on Instagram itself. That two-step flow is the most reliable check that exists.

A not-found page means no active profile lives at that URL, but the name can still be off-limits. It may belong to a banned or deactivated account, sit on Instagram's reserved list, or have been released recently. Freed-up handles often go through a holding period of roughly 14 days before anyone can claim them. The signup screen is the final word.

You can display them (Instagram lets you write your handle as @YourBrand), but capitalization is cosmetic only. Handles aren't case-sensitive, so @YourBrand and @yourbrand are the same name, and typing either in search or a URL reaches the same profile.

Instagram doesn't cap how often you change it, but treat changes as expensive anyway. Every mention, collab tag, and printed link pointing at your old handle breaks, and your old name may be claimable by someone else after a holding period. Pick a name you can keep, then change it rarely if ever.

Work variations before you give up: prefixes like its, hey, or the; suffixes like hq, official, or .co; or your name plus what you do (@sara.paints beats @sara__1998). The idea generator above builds a dozen rule-safe options from whatever you type. Keep it short and pronounceable. A clean variation beats a mangled exact match.

They don't affect the algorithm at all: Instagram ranks content, not punctuation. The real cost is human: handles with symbols are harder to say out loud, easier to mistype, and easier for copycats to imitate with a one-character swap. One period or underscore is fine; three is a findability problem.

Lock the same name on your other platforms while it's free, then start posting consistently. A claimed-but-dead handle helps no one. When you're ready to plan content, PostVona schedules and auto-publishes across Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, and X, so the accounts you just named actually stay active.

Stop juggling tools. Schedule everything in one place.
